Why Travel this Christmas?

Thanks to the underwear bomber who ruined Christmas, the friendly skies have turned dark. Travelers over this past Thanksgiving took to the highways in record numbers in order to avoid scanners and strips searches at airports. But travel they did and, regardless of the obstacles and inconveniences, nothing stops travelers at Christmas.

Little is known about the Wise Men who traveled from the east to find the Christ Child. Their appearance, barely a few sentences on the pages of Scripture, dissolves so quickly, it begs the question as to why they have commanded such prominence in the telling of the Christmas story.

Like a side plot, the Wise Men weave into the narrative, unwittingly stir up trouble, present their gifts then sneak out of the country in fear of their lives. That’s it. But why? They were astrologers! Sure, there was one star that was brighter than the others, but what drove them to lay extravagant gifts at the feet of a two-year-old in a faraway land? Why travel if the star was the prize? They could study the sky and its heavenly bodies from their own rooftop.

Clearly, it wasn’t about the star. If that’s all they were seeking, why bring gifts? No, it was the One the star pointed to that drew them to Judea. They knew from their studies of ancient Hebrew writings that this star heralded the birth of a king—a very special king—and they were driven to worship Him no matter what that journey entailed.

Their quest, hardly a passing curiosity, undoubtedly absorbed years of their attention prior to the arduous journey. It was a quest that has inspired millions, including me—souls who will not rest until they find the Christ Child of Christmas.

Fortunately, we don’t need to travel to a physical location to find Him. Our pursuit is one of faith. Believing that God is Who He says He is, that Jesus is Who He said He was, that the Bible is God’s inspired Word and that the story is not over until He says it’s over.

Yes, finding the Christ Child involves travel, but the land we must traverse to reach Him is that of our own heart: the mountains of lies and false doctrines, the valleys of pain and past hurts; the rivers of tears and misunderstandings and the deserts of loneliness and discouragement.

Why travel through such horrible conditions? Why leave the comfort of our habits and familiar surroundings to pay homage to an ancient character in a story that could possibly just be a fable perpetuated by religious fanatics? There is only one reason, and it throbs ceaselessly in every human heart from birth to deathbed: Love.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

That verse, John 3:16, like the Christmas story itself, is still to this day, the simple, uncomplicated reason why millions still travel to places of worship on a silent night in December.

It is the reason we stand in long lines of impatient shoppers to possess gifts for our loved ones—a reenactment of the extraordinary lengths to which God went when He wrapped His precious Son in human flesh—the perfect gift.

Love and hope, and the promise of an eternity of peace and goodwill, is that not the quest that calls to your heart every day of the year?

Travel to the King this Christmas, He is worthy of your most extravagant gifts.

Soul Cleaning

Get ready for deep cleaning!

April’s 28-Day Challenge on Facebook will be focused on taking serious action with the junk that we have allowed to stay in the closets of our mind and heart.

This particular challenge was inspired by my late Aunt Laverne who challenged me years ago to read the entire book of Philippians in my Bible every day for 30 consecutive days.  She boldly assured me that, “it will change your life!”

Aunt Laverne knew that the Bible is a type of washing machine, that agitates us until all the dirt is loosened from our minds and hearts and then rinses us with the pure water of Truth.

I am ashamed to say that I never took her up on that challenge.  Well, now I am!  Want to join me?

HERE’S THE PLEDGE:

From April 1 through April 28, I will read the entire book of Philippians every day.

HERE ARE THE RULES:

  • PRAY FIRST: Before I read Philippians, I will spend time in prayer asking God to cleanse and open my heart and mind.
  • STAY FOCUSED: As I read Philippians, I will not allow thoughts of “so-and-so” should read “such-and-such” a verse and distract me from what I need to hear from God about my own soul cleaning.
  • GET CLARITY: I will read the book of Philippians in different versions, translations or paraphrases to help open my understanding of the text.
  • BE ABSORBABLE: I will read Philippians all the way through like a love letter from God.
  • MAKE A LIST: Each day I will write down what area of my soul God is pinpointing and give it my full, prayerful attention. (My journal will help me stay accountable and obedient to God’s call to “be holy because I am holy” 1 Peter 1:16)
  • GET TO IT! I will attack each thing that God points out to me that needs cleaning by sincere action: repent, scrub and repeat as necessary.
  • STAY CLEAN: I will memorize key verses to assist me in keeping my mind and heart clean on a daily basis and to guard the ground I gain through this deep cleansing.
  • BE “ALL IN”: I will allow God’s Holy Spirit to choose what gets cleaned in my heart and mind and not regulate or restrict Him

God is very serious and deliberate about the cleanliness of our soul:

“But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:10 NLT)

So, let’s get busy!

Here are a few of the areas God will cleanse us in through His ALL-PURPOSE CLEANSER: PHILIPPIANS

  • Thankfulness
  • Joy
  • Encouragement
  • Prayer
  • Purpose
  • Attitude
  • Humility
  • Conduct
  • Unity
  • Work Ethics
  • Life Goals
  • Thought Life
  • Focus

God’s Word tells us that that if we earnestly search for Him, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). If you are ready for a real deep cleaning in your spiritual life, join me in April for this exciting, vigorous 28-day challenge!

Happy Valentines Day!

Happy Valentines Day!

Until yesterday, I always associated a home with a physical house and Valentines Day with lovers. But today I have a new perspective. You see, our house is for sale and though it’s where we lived when we were first married, and we absolutely love that little nest, it’s just a house–brick and mortar.

Because of the economy we had to price it lower than we wanted to and–until yesterday–it broke our hearts to  see it go at such a reduced price, especially after all the improvements we made.

But none of that matters anymore. You see, we moved in to Psalm 91. That’s our new address, if you want to know where to find us.  Now we know that no matter what is ahead, foreclosure, bankruptcy, etc., we will always have a place to live.  Here’s what our new house looks like:

_____________________________________

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.

For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.

He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.

Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.

Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.

Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished.

If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.

They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

The Lord says,

“I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”

Psalm 91 NLT
